Higher Things
“There is no way for anyone to reach the heights by going downward.”—Petrarch
Halfway through his climb of Mont Ventoux, the 14th-century Italian poet Petrarch was tempted to quit. The weather had turned, and he lost his bearings and found himself far from the beaten path. He kept on, however, ultimately reaching the summit by reminding himself (and us) that a heart and mind set on the higher things is the best safeguard against the gravitational pull of that which is base.
