Highlighting a weekend of competition at the 2018 APL Armlifting World Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia, Clay Edgin (USA) broke the men’s world record on the No. 4 Captains of Crush (CoC) Silver Bullet Hold, and Lyudmila Gaiduchenko (Ukraine) broke the women’s world record for the Apollon’s Axle double overhand deadlift.
Gathering grip strength competitors from around the world, the 2018 APL Armlifting World Championships began with the No. 3 Captains of Crush (CoC) Silver Bullet Hold. Dmitriy Sukhovarov (Russia) won the event with an impressive time of 51.44 seconds.
Clay Edgin (USA) has been targeting the world record on the No. 4 Captains of Crush (CoC) Silver Bullet Hold and he was not to be denied in St. Petersburg as he posted a time of 19.44 seconds. The owner of Santa Cruz Strength, Edgin quipped, “Now I can write a book called Russian Gold: Crushing with Clay!”
Next up was armlifting’s signature event, the Rolling Thunder one-hand deadlift. Classes included men and women, masters, open, and the top lift, overall, was posted by Roman Penkovskiy (Russia), with 120 kg.
The IronMind Hub followed and after an extensive discussion and demonstration of what was and was not considered a legal starting position, competitors dived into this classic test of pinch grip strength: Angel Kylagina (Russia) won the women’s side with a lift of 25 kg, and Ivan Krivykh (Russia) won the men’s side with a lift of 35 kg, beating the Finns Jouni Mahonen (second) and Harri Tolonen (third) on body weight.
The second day of competition kicked off with Apollon’s Axle double overhand deadlift and Lyudmila Gaiduchenko (Ukraine) added another kilo to her women’s world record, pushing the mark to 133 kg.
