Pusan, Korea - Competition in men's weightlifting at the 2002 Asian Games got underway with a strong performance by Wu Meijin of China.

Wu had a perfect day, snatching 122-, 127.5- and 130-kg, and hitting 157.5-, 160-, and 162.5-kg in the clean an jerk, to sweep the gold medals. Wang Shin Yuan (TPE) missed 130 twice in the snatch, and 167.5 twice in the clean and jerk.
