Saeed Jaber, who turned in a stunning performance at the 1999 World Weightlifting Championships, had knee surgery yesterday. Jaber, who lifted for Qatar, snatched 205 kg and cleaned and jerked 250 kg on his way to a gold, a silver and a bronze medal at the '99 Worlds in Athens, Greece, and in the process established himself as one of the top superheavyweights in the world. Jaber had previously lifted for Bulgaria, but was not widely known, which added to the drama of his performance in Athens. Jaber injured his right knee in training recently, and it is said that the surgery went very well.
