by Francis Brebner
President, International Highland Games Federation (IHGF)
The IHGF Scottish Stones of Strength qualifiers are all set for 2018. Charlie Blair Oliphant, of Scotland, a renowned stonelifter and the IHGF Stones of Strength representative for Scotland, has set up a series of four stonelifting qualifiers, where the top 2 or 3 stonelifting strength athletes from each will go to the finals on 2 September at the Blairgowrie and Rattray Highland Games.
A total of 16–24 athletes, men and women, will compete in the finals of the IHGF Scottish Stones of Strength Challenge; and the overall winners in the men’s and the women’s competitions will represent their country in the 2019 IHGF Stones of Strength World Challenge, in Fefor, Norway, all expenses paid.
To qualify, athletes will lift the renowned Ardblair Stones onto whisky butts at a height of 132 cm (52 in.). The nine stones range in weight from 18–152 kg (40–335 lb.). The top athletes with the best times in the four qualifiers will go to the finals. Bare hands only, no tacky, will be allowed on the stones in the qualifiers and finals. The stones must be placed/rolled into the recesses on the tops of the barrels and cannot be thrown. Multiple attempts may also be made at any of the qualifiers and at the finals.
