Wroclaw, Poland—Although the start was not storybook, Tan Yayun bounced back from missing her first two snatches to rack up four good lifts in a row—pocketing all three gold medals in the women’s 48-kg class at the World Weightlifting Championships, where competition began today.
Driving herself under this 115-kg jerk, Tan Yayun put China on the board in a big way at the 2013 World Weightlifting Championships.
Tan Yayun might have ended the evening in glory, but after she missed her opening snatch (84 kg), and then did the same thing on her second attempt, things were not looking so good, but she came out for her third attempt, something had changed and she smoked the weight.
Ryang Chan Hwa (North Korea) got the silver with 81 kg and Valencia Hernandez (Mexico) came through for Mexico, winning the bronze medal with 78 kg on bodyweight, after three women ended with that weight.
In the clean and jerk, Tan Yayun continued where she left off in the snatch: opening with 106 kg and making it look like an empty bar—a weight that nobody else in the class made. From there, she knocked off 110 kg and 115, all looking good and strong.
Ryan Chun Hwa cleaned and jerked 105 kg for the silver in the jerk and in the total; Valencia Hernandez’s 103-kg clean and jerk gave her two more bronze medals.
