2019 Finnish Grip Nationals
by Jyrki Rantanen, WHEA

The 2019 Finnish Grip Nationals were held on February 10 at the Turku Fairs Centre. The 5-event show went smoothly in 3 hours and along with finding our the champions of the year, we got a new world record as Harri Tolonen took back his IronMind Hub record with the result of 44.80 kg. He also tried to break 100-lb. barrier, but that was a little too much this time.

Along with the world record, we saw very decent results such as 5 men going 80 kg or more with the Little Big Horn and good overall level on the CoC Silver Bullet, including two times with with the Captains of Crushj No. 4 gripper (Tolonen 19.47 sec and Mähönen 5.19, along with 6 other guys going to 10-30 second range with the Captains of Crush No. 3 gripper.

Along with good results, we welcomed some newcomers from strongman to grip competitions, too, and surely the tough Finnish level will be spread around more after these guys get a little more event training under their belts.

In the women’s class we had bad luck with the flu season as Jaana Tanner and a few others needed to stay home for the competition day due health issues.

The top name comeback was to see Timo Lauttamus in Nationals after a long time—he came tight 2nd in -100kg class and produced excellent results like 95-kg Rolling Thunder lift etc.

The competition was judged excellently by Lucas Lindberg and his assistants.
