Substance over Rhetoric

“We find many who study but few who are wise.”—Hugh of St. Victor

Hugh, a 12th-century monk and scholar who worked mostly out of Paris, was well acquainted with the flaws of sophistry. The Sophists, dating back to five centuries before Christ, were professional rhetoricians, men who prized the winning of an argument over the ascertainment of truth. As those who are willing to justify any means by an impressive end still largely populate today’s strength scene, it seems we find many who seek mass but few who attain substance.
