IronMind: Strength for All Seasons

Young teenager, twenty-something, double nickel, or octogenarian . . . whatever your age, it's the season for boosting your strength and health.

When you're a teenager, things are changing rapidly, and a proven way of channeling all that energy, potential, and growth in a constructive direction is to train regularly.  Along with getting fitter, stronger and healthier, lifting weights can help teach discipline, goal setting, and delayed gratification, demonstrating the benefits they bring.  As your physique is transformed, so is your personality; and the one-time geeks and wallflowers become silent heroes or vibrant leaders.

For most forms of strength, your twenties are the prime territory—the years when you will forge your lifetime PRs, the years when you are most likely to be an Olympian or a world record holder, if that's your path.  It's also a time of heavy demands from school and work, as you lay the groundwork and attempt to gain traction for the rest of your life, and it's also the period when you might well be starting a family—one of the single most game-changing events of your life.

Forty used to mark the beginning of middle age, but now it's common to see some very impressive performances, as well as youthful appearances and perspectives, among a generation previously confined to the golf cart, couch or boat at this point in their lives.  No need trying to exceed what you lifted when you were a couple decades younger, but you can aim for something like your high school bodyweight, being both solid and capable at the same time.  Match that fountain of youth with some of the good things you've gained along the way, and you'll see why some people consider the middle years to be prime time.

And if you're well into the second half-century of your life, there are some pretty potent reasons to train:  how about strength and health, just like when you were a mere 50-year-old whippersnapper?  If you've ever seen a really fit person of 70 put people decades younger to shame, you'll see the payoff; plus, you can imagine how good this well-trained person has felt along the way.

So, young or old, or maybe somewhere in the middle, it's no secret:  progressive training is good for you and it makes you feel even better.  If you're already training, keep it up, and if you never started or if your weights are as dusty as a Texas country road, get it in gear and make them your new best friends.

Whatever your age, strength is for all seasons.

Thank you for being a part of IronMind—we appreciate your support and your business.
